The appointment of Prophet Muhammed (sallahu alaihi wassalam) was a need of the time. There is no doubt that many civilizations and cultures have flourished while others perished. New ones start budding out at the sunset of the other. Sometimes a new form starts taking place from the one that is dying out. Buddhism was the onset of the end of Vedic civilization.

By sixth century after Jesus (Isa), some part of the world was already into Dark Age, while others were waiting to have a change. Crime was increasing with decrease in humanity and morality. Man was in utter distress. Some of them were just waiting to hear about a new leader – the expected one who could fix their problems.

The tasks undertaken were huge and needed great leadership, effort, responsibility and care. It was perfected well by Prophet Muhammed.

The base of Islam is Thouheed. It contains the light for human values that is strong enough to purify man. With Islam ends the chain of Prophethood. No Messenger will come for mankind after Muhammed. His message is strong enough to change a nation and eventually the whole of mankind.

The message of Islam is guidance to mankind based on which man can live according to the will of his Creator. It’s a natural guide that never conflicts with human inteliigence or thinking. It actually induced man to reason for everything they do and find in nature. Islam built a nation that contributed a lot to the science and technology that we see today.

Until the introduction of Islam, most religions counted on the holy revelations, visions and words of extra ordinary souls for their knowledge and lessons. In Islam, it is the divine revelation (wahi) of the Holy Quran. Islam considers nature and history as secondary source that would help and supplement in the understanding of the revelation.

Verily, in the alternation of the night and the day and in all that Allah has created in the heavens and the earth are Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) for those people who keep their duty to Allah, and fear Him much.(10:6)

Indeed in their stories, there is a lesson for men of understanding. It (the Quran) is not a forged statement but a confirmation of the Allahs existing Books (the Taurat (Torah), the Injeel (Gospel) and other Scriptures of Allah) and a detailed explanation of everything and a guide and a Mercy for the people who believe.” (12:111)

Thouheed teach man what is the meaning of dignity, pride, skills and deficiencies purifying him. This is how Islam purifies man. Many a times, whenever the Quran mentions about Prophethood, it is associated with the phrases such as “recite unto them” and “teaching the Book and knowledge”.

"Our Lord! Send amongst them a Messenger of their own (and indeed Allah answered their invocation by sending Muhammad Peace be upon him ), who shall recite unto them Your Verses and instruct them in the Book (this Quran) and Al-Hikmah (full knowledge of the Islamic laws and jurisprudence or wisdom or Prophethood, etc.), and sanctify them. Verily! You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise."” (2:129) – Part of the prayer made by Ibrahim (Abraham) and Ismail (Ishmael) (alaihissalam) while raising the foundation of the Kaabah (The House of Allah).

“Similarly (to complete My Blessings on you) We have sent among you a Messenger (Muhammad SAW) of your own, reciting to you Our Verses (the Quran) and sanctifying you, and teaching you the Book (the Quran) and the Hikmah (i.e. Sunnah, Islamic laws and Fiqh - jurisprudence), and teaching you that which you used not to know.” (2:151)

“Indeed Allah conferred a great favour on the believers when He sent among them a Messenger (Muhammad SAW) from among themselves, reciting unto them His Verses (the Quran), and purifying them (from sins by their following him), and instructing them (in) the Book (the Quran) and AlHikmah (the wisdom and the Sunnah of the Prophet SAW (i.e. his legal ways, statements, acts of worship, etc.)), while before that they had been in manifest error.” (3:164)

He it is Who sent among the unlettered ones a Messenger (Muhammad SAW) from among themselves, reciting to them His Verses, purifying them (from the filth of disbelief and polytheism), and teaching them the Book (this Quran, Islamic laws and Islamic jurisprudence) and Al-Hikmah (As-Sunnah: legal ways, orders, acts of worship, etc. of Prophet Muhammad SAW). And verily, they had been before in mainfest error;” (62:2)

These points to the fact that an objective understanding of God, His Books and the Knowledge revealed would benefit man to purify him.

Islam encourages man to think that everything in nature is happening due to the Will of God. It helps to understand why each and everything is born and dies in this world. It negates the popular concept that God took rest after creating everything. Islam teaches the involvement of God in every action man takes and its consequences holding him responsible for his action. It helps understand the reason for the existence of everything in this universe. Why is rain falling? What do we have sky as a roof? What is the importance of having a fertile land? Why do we need to exist in peace? Finding answers to questions like this is easier with the concept of God and to understand him better. Ultimately Thouheed becomes the force that drives life of a man.

“O mankind! Worship your Lord (Allah), Who created you and those who were before you so that you may become Al-Muttaqoon. Who has made the earth a resting place for you, and the sky as a canopy, and sent down water (rain) from the sky and brought forth therewith fruits as a provision for you. Then do not set up rivals unto Allah (in worship) while you know (that He Alone has the right to be worshipped).” (2:21,22)

Thouheed helped man expand and develop his capabilities with great dignity and humility sticking firmly to the ideals. It changed the uncivilized Arabs into the leaders of the world. Baghdad and Cordova are witness to such great civilization. The science that Europe and the West enjoy, use and develop is the results of the contributions made by the Islamic civilization.

May Allah (subhanahu wa thaala) help us understand Him better. Ameen.
