Stephanie - Where do people who practice Islam believe their spirit goes after they die?
Rukaiah - Muslims not only believe in life on earth and life after death, but also believe in what in Arabic is called barzakh . Barzakh means 'barrier'. Death is a barrier and as humans, after death, we are barred from this life on Earth as well as the life in Hell or Heaven. It is a temporary state. It is an interval between this-life and AfterLife. The soul is what is the most important. The body is merely a cover for the soul. When the body is lowered into the grave, Angels question the person about his beliefs on Earth, and if he had been a righteous person, the doors to Heaven are opened and the body rests with ease in the cool breeze coming from Heaven; but if the person was a sinner then the body is punished in various ways. There are many supplications of our Prophet [s] which deal with seeking refuge from the punishment of the grave. This state of barzakh is independent of time and space. People who've researched on the topic of life in the grave say that the body as such is lifeless without the soul. When the soul leaves the body, it goes up to the Heaven where two big books are kept. Our deeds are recorded in them and then the soul is returned to the dead in the grave... the body can feel the punishment or reward in the grave only if the soul is returned. The view that the spirit returns to the grave is not too convincing for some people who say that people who drown or disappear mysteriously are not buried. Are we to assume that their souls do not enter this interval called 'barzakh'? Well Stephanie, we as humans are not quite sure where the soul goes except that it enters a state called barzakh. Whether this barzakh is the grave itself or any other place, Allah Knows Better
