by Abdus Salam Bendaoud Al-Manar Issue - 36 Could any one on earth today say that the world is fine? I do not think so. Wherever we turn our faces, we see problems of all sorts. Then comes the unbiased theory, ‘if Allah is all love, why do we see all these inhuman calamities, why do children have to die, why…?’ of course to us Muslims, such question and its alike would never cross our minds.
So why then such questions? The answer is simple: Islam deals with the human nature in all its aspects from going to the toilet up to ruling a state. All this is mentioned in the preserved sources, Al–Qur’an and As–Sunnah, which emphasise that nothing happens without a reason. Allah (swt) said (in the meaning): “Verily! Allah will not change the good condition of a people as long as they do not change their state of goodness themselves (by committing sins and by being ungrateful and disobedient to Allah).” [13:11]. Many people claim, to a certain extent, that they follow their religious teachings. But what if these teachings themselves do not reflect the real divine message? what would be the end? Well, exactly what is happening today in the world; a world full of problems, corruptions and misunderstandings. In the world we are living, countless infringements of the divine laws are witnessed and of course, as a consequence to that, the anger and calamities of the Lord are befalling us. Allah (swt) says (in the meaning): “Evil (or mischief) has appeared on land and sea because of what the hands of men have earned (by oppression and evil deeds).” [30:41]. Many other verses from the Qur’an show that calamities befalling people are due to their evil deeds, Allah (swt) says (in the meaning): “And if the people of the towns had believed and had the piety, certainly, We should have opened for them blessings from the heavens and the earth, but they belied. So We took them (with punishment) for what they used to earn.” [7:96] also: “And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. And He pardons much.” [42:30]. Here we are then! Right in the heart of the problem! Something has changed and what is that thing? Well, the answer is straight forward. It is our wrong doings which have caused the lack of Allah’s blessings; and due to that, famine and droughts are striking day and night leaving behind many destitutes and a lot of chaos around the world. It is well apparent that disobeying Allah (swt) leads to insecurity. So whosoever wants to safeguard himself from the wrath of Allah should follow the right guidance and whosoever wants to carry on with his life away from Islam, then he should bear the consequences of his actions in both this life and in the hereafter. The reasons behind the world’s erring and deviance are mentioned in the following Hadeeth, in which the Prophet (saws) warned his companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) against what we are living right in today, he (saws), the Truthful said (in the meaning): “Five (things), if you are put to trial with, and I seek refuge in Allah that you do not see them: If unlawful sex appears in a people and they make it openly known, then plague and diseases which were not in their past predecessors will strike them.
If they cheat in measure and weight, they will be punished by droughts, famine and transgression of their leaders against them.
If they do not pay Zakaat they will be prevented rain and were it not because of animals, there would not be any rain at all.
if they break Allah’s covenant and His Messenger’s, Allah will punish them with an external enemy (i.e. not Muslims) who will take some of what belongs to them.
And if their leaders do not rule by the Book of Allah and chose from what he revealed (i.e. take that which they like and leave the rest), He will make them fight one another.” [reported by Ibn Majeh, and authenticated by Sh. Al–Albany]. Isn’t our world swimming in all this? Indeed it is! Therefore, it is not a question of ‘love or not’. It is rather a question of obeying or disobeying the commands of the Creator. This is what makes a whole world of difference for all of us living on the earth.
