'O ye who believe! Let not some men among you laugh at others: It may be that the (latter) are better than the (former): Nor let some women laugh at others: It may be that the (latter are better than the (former): Nor defame nor be sarcastic to each other, nor call each other by (offensive) nicknames: Ill-seeming is a name connoting wickedness, (to be used of one) after he has believed: And those who do not desist are (indeed) doing wrong.' [hujurat 49: 11]

Laughing at other people is one of the best form of entertainment for many of us. A typical characteristic of people indulging in this kind of 'laughing' is that they are very friendly with someone, but when the person turns his back, they make fun of his clothes, behavior and the like. AstaghfiruAllah.

al-Hakam [ra] said he heard Ikrimah [ra] say, 'I do not know who invited whom to dinner, Ibn Abbas or his cousin. Anyway, as the servant girl was serving them, one of them called her a whore. The other said, ' Slow Down! If she does not have you punished for saying that in this world, she will surely have you punished for it in the hereafter!' The Other said, 'Do you really mean that?' Ibn Abbas replied, 'Allah does not love obscenity or those who are obscene.' [Imam Bukhari's book of morals and manners, hadith # 332]

Hakim ibn Sa'd said he heard Ali ibn Abi Talib say, 'Do not be quick to judge, do not gossip, and do not be one of those who cannot be trusted to keep a secret, for beyond you [in the next world] there will be Hell to pay and [in this world] terrible trials.' [Imam Bukhari's book of morals and manners, hadith # 328]

Let us [me included] make a conscious effort to not point out people's faults so as to enjoy a laugh that will last only a few moments. Ameen. May Allah cover our faults on the Day of Judgement.
