Many Muslims are doubtful about the Fast on the day of Arafah [9 Dhul Hijjah], which is most likely to fall on March 4, 2001. I hope this mail sort of clears the air.

For the Pilgrims

It s quite clear from the ahadith that it is preferable for pilgrims to not Fast on the day of Arafah. This is owing to the existing difficulties of the pilgrimage. Allah desires ease from us, not hardship.

Narrated Um Al-Fadl bint-Harith, "While the people were with me on the day of 'Arafat they differed as to whether the Prophet was fasting or not; some aid that he was fasting while others said that he was not fasting. So, I sent to him a bowl full of milk while he was riding over his camel and he drank it." [bukhari Volume 3, Book 31, Number 209]

Umm al-Fadl bint- al-Harith reported that some people argued about the fasting of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) on the day of 'Arafa. Some of them said that he had been fasting, whereas the others said that he had not been fasting. I sent a cup of milk to him while he was riding his camel at 'Arafa, and he drank it. [muslim Book 006, Number 2494]

For the Muslims who're not on pilgrimage

The Prophet [s] said regarding Muslims who're not performing hajj and are in the comforts of their home.

Abu Qatada reported... the Prophet [s] said, 'I seek from Allah that fasting on the day of 'Arafa may atone for the sins of the preceding and the coming years. and I seek from Allah that fasting on the day of Ashura may atone for the sins of the preceding year.' [muslim Book 6, Number 2602]

Fasting on the day of Arafah helps erase our sins, so let's make the best of this opportunity. May Allah accept our deeds. Amin.

wassalam, rukaiah
